A Tip For Parents Dealing With Teenagers.
A Tip For Parents Dealing With Teenagers.
Teenagers now come armed with a psychology degree from TikTok University:
“You’re gaslighting me!”
“You’re toxic!”
“You’re a narcissist!”
Meanwhile, you’ve only asked them to put their socks in the laundry.
Being a parent and managing these accusations isn’t easy.
If you react, you can look out of your depth. So, here’s a tip: Stay calm, really calm. Even scary calm. If you have to say something, say something like, ‘Thank you for letting me know/telling me this.”
Then, make sure you aren’t any of those things. If you are, then it might be something to address possibly with your therapist. If not, walk away and get busy with chores and so on.
If they do it again, follow the same procedure and your teenagers will soon get over it, once they realised you are NOT rattled. Eventually, they’ll realise their power move didn’t work — and you still run the house (and indeed the WiFi).
It’s a difficult time for teenagers as they separate out and away from their parents. However, this is when they desperately need parents to stay extra calm, resolute and strong.
However, your experience and survival tips can help others, especially if you’ve survived the parenting frontlines. Have you got any?
