Yoga (Or Any MovementAction/Activity) Can Help You Recover From Grief.

But how can it?

Sometimes we forget that the body stores emotions and that strong emotions can get stuck if we don’t move or get active. During grief and due to shock, the body can become almost paralysed having to cope with the reality of losing a friend, family member, child or spouse.

Instead, it is important that we find ways from walking, running, going to the gym, swimming and so, to help the body release the tension. I use the word “tension”, because the body can become tense with emotion. It freezes. And this can stall recovery.

However one method of enabling the body to release the tension of grief, is yoga.

Yoga acts as a therapeutic tool for releasing grief by combining mindful breathing, gentle movement, and somatic awareness to shift stuck emotions and alleviate physical tension held in the body.

By fostering self-compassion and present-moment awareness, yoga creates a safe space to process loss, reducing anxiety and stress.

How Yoga Releases Grief
* Physical Release: Grief causes physical contraction; yoga poses, especially heart-openers, help release this tension.
* Emotional Processing: It encourages being present with emotions without judgment, allowing for a safe release (catharsis).
* Nervous System Regulation: Deep breathing (pranayama) and restorative poses calm the nervous system, reducing anxiety and stress.
* Endorphin Production: Physical movement stimulates natural mood enhancers.

I therefore would encourage you or if you know someone struggling with grief to consider this avenue as it can bring enormous relief, not only emtionally but physically too.
